Biography
As someone who has always been an avid reader, I fell in love with words at a young age. I quickly became fascinated by their power to evoke such a wide range of emotions, from humor or anger, to empathy or comfort. After high school, I attended Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. I was most comfortable with creative writing, persuasive writing and opinion writing, but I wanted to venture out of my comfort zone. I began taking classes in which I learned report writing, grant proposal writing, editorial writing, media writing, feature writing, news writing, and film review writing. I have always been confident in my ability to write effectively, but taking these courses challenged me to pinpoint my audience by using specific language and creativity to connect with them.
While in school, I had the opportunity to write for YSU's campus newspaper, The Jambar. I gained valuable experience working in a newsroom, pitching story ideas, tracking down sources, conducting interviews, writing and editing articles and meeting strict deadlines. I sincerely enjoyed the thrill of working in a fast-paced environment.
Along with writing, editing, communications, journalism and public relations courses, I took several design courses and discovered somewhat of a hidden passion. From fonts and layouts to colors and patterns, I loved being able to create something new. For my senior project I created a 22-page full-color magazine showcasing the artistic talent of tattoo and piercing artists in the Mahoning Valley.
I graduated from YSU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional Writing and Editing and a minor in Journalism. After obtaining my degree, I began my career as Regional Editor at a newspaper publishing company in south Texas. I was responsible for writing and editing content for five papers in surrounding counties to meet six strict deadlines each week. I was also responsible for the layout and design of three of the papers, along with website updates. I was given the opportunity to work as head editor for one of the company's papers, generating all content, including photos, and designing the pages every week. I also designed several tabs/inserts for the company.
My ultimate career goal is to work for a magazine or a publishing company. I am seeking a position in which I am challenged daily and constantly have the opportunity to be creative.
